Email Marketing: We need a Love Button

It seems everywhere you go on the web; you can “Like” something.  You can like a blog post, Facebook user, content, ads, even people, but email doesn’t have a “Like” button.  As usual we have a “Mark as Spam” button.  As an email marketing professional, I’m just not feeling the love.

Email should have a “Love” button

When an email comes into your email client; Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, etc. there would be a “Love” button and a mark as spam button.  The “Love” button would work like a “Mark as Safe Sender” or “Always show in my inbox with photos on because I love this sender.”  Yeah, yeah I know you can add senders to a safe list, to your address book, etc. and all those thing help.  But does the average email user know or even remember to do this?  Not likely.

Alas email seems only to have a Hate button, where’s the love?  Sure email clients are getting smarter with Priority Inbox and processes that track your open habits to learn what you like and what you don’t.  As well, they look across all the emails you send and how they are received and acted on, but it’s not perfect.

I have lots of email coming in I love, I don’t always open them if I’m busy and may miss them a few months in a row.  But that doesn’t mean I don’t love them anymore.

By the way, isn’t the “Like” button a bit strange?  I can only “Like” you, I can’t Love you.  And certainly, I can’t “Dislike” you.  Well I guess I can dislike you, though you won’t know unless I comment as such.  But most times you’re just not worth the time.  It must be nice to only have a “Like” option.

So while the rest of the internet world gets to be liked, email only gets to be marked as spam.  Sigh…

We all need a love button to click every once in a while 😉
