Why I’m Thankful for Email Marketing and Email Geeks

As we approach Thanksgiving here in the U.S., I thought it was time to reflect on what email marketing has brought to my life. It may sound silly, but I owe a lot to the email marketing industry and the people in it. So bear with me for a moment—there is a bonus in it for you at the end!

Finding Love

Email was the first communication I ever had with my wife. We met on an online dating site. An email directed me to her profile, saying we were a good match. 10 years later (married for seven), I’d say the email got that one right.

Being an email marketer, I know the value of a good subject line. Standing out in what was sure to be a crowded inbox was important.

So the subject line of my first email to her was “Unleash Heaven.” The reason? I was responding to the data in her profile that said one of her favorite movies lines was “Unleash Hell” from “Gladiator.”

The rest, as they say, is history.

Finding Success

I’ve worked in email marketing for almost 15 years now. I’m thankful for the ability to always make a good living helping people and companies with their email marketing campaigns. I truly love what I do—even when it drives me crazy (and it’s a short trip to get there).

Finding Friends

I am also thankful for what has to be the most interesting and helpful group of people in any industry. I’m, of course, talking about the “Email Geeks.” I’m still amazed with how competitors will share information and help with problems at the drop of a hat.

There are many with whom I’ve only tweeted, but I’ve talked on the phone and emailed with several others—even met a few in person. I hope to meet even more email industry folks in person in January at the MarketingSherpa Email Summit in Vegas. (Look me up if you’re planning to be there!)

What are you thankful for?

Tell me in the comments what you are thankful for when it comes to email marketing. Did you find a job? A significant other? Increase your business?

Let me know how email marketing has made your life better.
